Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a significant awards ceremony nears, you'll find a clamor to include of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences globally and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier game development, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
