Sheff Wed Faces Serious Challenges, Says New Football Authority

'We will play a key role in football's future' - football oversight chief the new chairman

Sheffield Wednesday's current difficulties are seen as a "serious issue" and the new football authority is seeking powers to look into club affairs in comparable cases, the newly appointed chairman the official has stated.

In a wide-ranging interview, the chairman, who was appointed on Monday, showed understanding towards the club's followers.

The chairman convened with four supporters' associations associated with the football team recently.

The Championship side have been experiencing difficulties in multiple areas in the current year, with the club delaying salary disbursements on multiple instances, including in September.

"Clearly Sheffield Wednesday has been a significant problem for EFL and a substantial concern for English football," the regulator explained.

"The club represents one of the historic institutions for English football and in recent days we have met Sheffield Wednesday supporters' groups.

"We are seeking authority... which will allow us to have Wednesday and comparable cases brought to our attention if they warrant scrutiny and addressed."

Monetary Issues and Proprietorship Status

The team's struggling chairman the Thai businessman suggested earlier this year he would be open to selling the club at their home ground, but he has been unable to finalize an agreement with potential new owners.

Missed wage deadlines on time in spring months caused limitations by the league officials in June, preventing the club from carrying out any recruitment activities for the following recruitment periods, although the ban was rescinded in August.

Regulator's Perspective

The regulator explained: "Our role exists to serve the supporters of Wednesday, Bury or any football club where supporters are loyal to a community organization that has represented their community in numerous instances.

"I have absolute sympathy for the team's plight, as I do for every team that over recent decades have faced collapse, or approached financial ruin, for causes separate from the supporters."

When asked if the authority might compel an chairman to relinquish a club if they are deemed unsuitable, the regulator answered: "When asking whether 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the response would be once we assemble the facts and understand the situation, we will."

But Kogan stressed that requiring chairmen to relinquish clubs would be considered the final option and the regulator would prefer to cooperate with proprietors.

"Our least desirable course of action is start getting involved with an specific team, an individual owner, without having the opportunity to collaborate with that chairman to fix the challenges confronting the team and the chairman's encountering," the regulator explained.

"However, realistically, when you examine the past of football, over the past few decades there have been particular chairmen, not many, but some who have been irresponsible in the way which they've been managing their teams and eventually refuse to accept accountability for the future."

'Errors may undo substantial development'

Kogan met with representatives from 110 clubs to detail the scope of the oversight body this week and insisted it was a "proactive meeting" with a "substantial involvement" from the grassroots to elite level.

"The role holds considerable importance, because should mistakes occur, if the world of football gets it wrong, the significant advances achieved might evaporate rapidly," Kogan said.

"Such an outcome is universally undesirable in the realm of domestic football is a major achievement - we need to continue the progress.

"Substantial financial resources entering the sport and has been channeled for the past two decades, because there are no assurances it will keep flowing into the sport, which is among the factors explaining I think we have to take a really clear view on risk and of course, of the immediate future."

Premier League Concerns

Top flight officials resisted the establishment of an oversight body because of apprehensions regarding adverse consequences on the top-flight's competitiveness, but the regulator stated: "I completely endorse the success and growth as an commercial operation of the top division.

"I of all people understand the worry about compromising the Premier League as a premium product of England. But concurrently, if you engage with division representatives after today's meeting, they would have had a high level of reassurance -and, in fact, they have been telling us in private they have a high level of reassurance."

Political Connections

The chairman continues to confront a "thorough examination" by the official appointments authority after he acknowledged providing funds to the opposition group in the past.

The chairman contributed funds to Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport the minister's leadership bid, along with that of the current Prime Minister.

"I've been completely open about my previous political affiliation [with Labour], and that party membership ceased the day the select committee approved my appointment," the chairman stated.

"I am presently disconnected from any form of political activity."
