An Compassion of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Had Just Met Assisted Me Land the Job That Changed My Life

In the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my friend was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had planned a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side called International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, found a table, and began chatting with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He asked me what I my profession was, and I shared that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – close to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I should apply for a position with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The engineering student approached me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but right away explained to my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

In typical New York fashion – a place where opportunities abound – she declared: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for three years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his full name, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in multiple respects. I would never have had the confidence or self-assurance to reach out at an elite institution and ask for a job. Moreover, I had long dreamed to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

What's more, that job in New York resulted in a role in Europe where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
